Topic—Borrowing and Lending: Neither a Borrower Nor a Lender Be!
Albert by Lilian and Julie by Emma.

Albert and Julie are studying at the library.

Albert: Julie, can I borrow your eraser?

Julie: Here you go.

Albert: Thanks. I’ve tried to figure out this math problem five times!
I keep making mistakes. The paper is getting thin from so much erasing!

Julie: My math marks are getting better and better. I’m using a special study guide this semester.

Albert: Can you lend it to me someday? I really need help in math.

Julie: Actually, you can borrow it now. I’ll need it back next week, though.

Albert: Thanks a million!

The next day, Albert and Julie are back at the library.

Albert: Can I borrow your eraser again? I bought a new one, but I used it up already!

Julie: Here. Are you still having math trouble?

Albert: Yes, I’ve had to erase so many mistakes that I’m getting a sore wrist!

Julie: Isn’t the study guide useful?

Albert: Actually, I lent it to Jerry. He’s going to read it and explain it to me!

Julie: But I lent it to you, not to Jerry! What if he doesn’t return it?

Albert: He will. Don’t worry. Jerry’s a responsible guy.

It’s Monday. Albert is at the library. Julie enters.

Julie: Am I glad to see you! Ineed my study guide! do you have it with you?

Albert: No, Jerry has still has it. He’s going to give it back to me on Thursday.

Julie: Thursday? But my exam is on Wednesday! I told you I needed it this week!

Albert: I thought you meant by the end of the week.

Julie: Albert! Don’t you understand the importance of this? This is a major exam! My whole future can depend on it!

Albert: OK! OK! I’ll try to get it back.

It is the next day.

Julie: Albert, please tell me you got my study guide back!

Albert: Well, no. Jerry—“Mr. Responsible”—lost it! But I got something even better. Here.

Julie: Hey! A study guide on CD-ROM!

Albert: It’s got games, activities, and dozens of ways to review lesson. It even has simple tests!

Julie: It’s awesome! Thanks, Albert. This will really come in handy!

Albert: Say, Julie, do you think you could lend me $50? I want to buy one for myself now. I’ll pay you back!

Julie: Sorry, Albert. I have a new rule: Neither a borrower nor a lender be!

Topic-A frustrated friend

Emily and Mike spend a lot of time together. They are university classmates and good friends. But they are very different! Mike is charming, popular and often forgets things. Emily is quite, kind and helpful.

Lately, Emily is a little frustrated with Mike ,“Mr. popular”often asks Emily to do things for him. Emily is glad to help his friend. But when Emily asks Mike for help, Mike says he is too busy. Helping Mike is taking up more and more of Emily’s time. And Emily is starting to feel like Mike really takes advantage of her.

If you were Emily, what would you do?

Decision 1
(Emily talks to her friend, Cindy)

Emily: I am not sure what to do. Should I just keep helping Mike whenever he asks me?

Cindy: I don not know. You might start to resent him. That is not good for your friendship.

Emily: I know.

Cindy: Could you talk to him about this?

Emily: I could, but I don’t like to confront people. You know that.

Cindy: Well, then, what are you going to do? Just resent him?

Emily: No. But I don’t have to do everything he asks, either. I can just tell him I am busy.

Cindy: So you are just going to make up excuses not to help him?

Emily: Sure. That’s probably the easiest way to handle it.

Decision 2

Emily: I feel like my friendship with Mike is becoming one-sided. I don’t mind doing favors for him. But I wish he would help me sometimes, too.

Cindy: Why doesn’t he? That seems kind of selfish.

Emily: He doesn’t mean to be. I’m sure he doesn’t realize he always says no to me. He just tries to do too much, so he doesn’t have any time left over.

Cindy: Well, do you really have time to do all these favors?

Emily: I guess so. I might as well keep doing favors for him. It doesn’t really hurt, and after all, he is a good friend.

Cindy: And you’re a good friend, too.

William:Hey!Howard!

William:It's my new automobile phone.
Howard:Wooooo. You're so high-tech.
William:What ,this old thing!? This is nothing. But it keeps me super organized.
Howard:What does it do?
William:It gives me access to the Internet and e-mail.
Howard:That's always a plus.
William:It's a phone of course and it has SMS, short message system.
Howard:You'd have that with any normal phone.
William:But this also lets me browse the Internet and instant message.
Howard:So short of offering Word, Excel, and Photoshop, it's a laptop.
William:It makes it possible for me to stay connected and search for info

without a laptop.
Howard:But will you be able to use it when you go back to visit Canada?
William:That's a good question, Howard.
Howard:Um, thanks Professor William.
William:Seriously! This phone is awesome because it's supported by

ninety-five wireless carriers in forty countries.
Howard:Wow. So people all over the world have them already.
William:Yep.
Howard:Sounds super convenient.
William:But this convenience comes at a price. I got the 7100i series

phone with Bluetooth.
Howard:Sick!What's that?
William:It's just this wireless earpiece. Don't freak out. It's cool.
Howard:It's just that they choose weird names, Blueberry, Strawberry,

Bluetooth, yellow tooth ……..
William:Ha-ha. Anyway, all this cost me two-hundred and fifty bucks!

Howard:Well, I don't have one. I guess I am a little behind the times.
William:You’re living in the stone age as far as the rest of the world is concerned.
Howard:Ha-ha-ha…!
William:Ha-ha-ha…!
